The UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of commercial robotics Tharsus, is celebrating along with TRAC, after two of its apprentices were acknowledged in the regional heat of the “Intermediate & Advanced Final Year Apprentice Award” at this year’s EEF Future Manufacturing Awards.  We are hugely proud of the success of these two Apprentices who have been lead by Doug Burt here at TRAC.

Jack Thomas 21, was awarded the “highly commended” accolade recognising his ability to apply his in-depth knowledge and technical understanding of systems across a multitude of mechanical and electrical tasks, whilst Rebecca Henry, also 21 won first place after impressing judges with her commitment, ambition and drive to pursue a career in manufacturing. She is now in the running for the national title where she will go head-to-head with regional winners from across the UK at the national awards gala in London early next year.

Celebrating the achievements of apprentices in engineering and manufacturing businesses in their final year, the award recognises apprentices who have done the most to seize the training and development opportunities presented to them during their apprenticeship programme. It is highly-respected and hotly contested with winners selected by a panel of judges drawn from business leaders, industry experts and academics.



Tharsus Manufacturing Manager Gordon Ramsey said: “We are immensely proud of our apprentices and all the hard work and enthusiasm they put in to learn and develop in our business. To see Rebecca and Jack acknowledged in such an award is fantastic. They both demonstrate the capacity, ability and tenacity of individuals with years of experience in manufacturing and they utilise this ability to participate as team members and leaders on a variety of activities.”

Since starting their apprenticeship with Tharsus in 2015, Rebecca and Jack have studied at The Real ApprenticeshipCompany working towards Level 3 EAL NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Maintenance and Level 3 EAL Diploma in Engineering Technology in addition to gaining valuable on-the-job experience as Technical Officers at Tharsus.

Speaking of the win, Rebecca said “I was really overwhelmed to win this award. The calibre and number of applicants was extremely high. Although I was shocked, it felt great to be recognised for the work that I do, and has definitely given me a confidence boost. I think the fact that both Jack and myself won an award at the event shows how the apprenticeship scheme offered by Tharsus has definitely helped us to grow and will continue to allow us to do so.”

Jack added “My apprenticeship at Tharsus has given me a great deal of experience in a lot of different areas. The variety of products we have had coming through the business throughout my apprenticeship has been key to my development, alongside the team of people who are always willing to push me in the correct direction and show me the correct methods that should be used.”

Tharsus has long been an advocate for apprenticeships as a route for young people to learn the hands on skills they need to build a successful and rewarding career. From their headquarters in Blyth, Northumberland, they currently have 9 apprentices undergoing training and take on a new cohort every year with the main disciplines being mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering, however they also have apprentices in HR, finance, design and business administration.

Apprentices at Tharsus spend time on a number of different projects within the company, ensuring they are given the opportunity to learn to master many diverse and exciting tasks. In addition they are able to network, share experiences and learn from each other as well as being mentored by industry experts.
