There are two types of apprenticeships offered by the Real Apprenticeship Company – ‘Frameworks’ and ‘Standards’ – and they are assessed differently. Most of our apprentices are on Standards and all Standards are labelled as such on your dashboard. If you’re not sure what kind of apprenticeship you’re on, your Learning Coach should be able to tell you.
Most level 2 apprenticeships last for 12 months, though this can go up to 18 months or even a few years for higher level programmes.
Frameworks are assessed continually throughout your apprenticeship. Your Learning Coach will undertake a review at least every 12 weeks to see how you are progressing and to give guidance to help you complete your portfolio of evidence. The portfolio is how you are assessed and is your chance to show you are great at your job.
Even if you don’t complete your apprenticeship, you may still be able to get a certificate for any portfolio work you completed before leaving.
Frameworks are gradually being phased out in favour of the new Apprenticeship Standards introduced in May 2017.
Apprenticeship Standards are programmes designed by companies to meet their needs and train the employees of tomorrow.
Unlike Frameworks, Standards are assessed at the end. After you finish your apprenticeship, you progress to the End Point Assessment (EPA.) This is conducted by an external organisation and may take place in a single day or be spaced over a period of months depending on the apprenticeship level. Once you reach the end of your apprenticeship, you will have a Gateway meeting with your Learning Coach and your employer to decide whether you are ready to progress to EPA.
A range of assessment types are used in the End-Point Assessment:
Practical: could be –
Observation: the assessor will observe how you perform one or more duties in the workplace and may also ask you questions during or after the observation.
Demonstration: a demonstration of your ability taking place in a practical setting such as a simulated work area in an assessment centre or a skills development facility. It can be supplemented by questioning during or after the demonstration.
Knowledge Test: a more traditional assessment taken under test conditions. It can be multiple-choice, have open-answer and scenario/case-study based questions or a mix.
Project: done after you finish your apprenticeship to showcase an aspect of your work. It might be assessed alone or could be used as the basis for another part of your assessment.
Presentation: delivered to an individual assessor. It may be followed by questioning.
Portfolio: A collection of your best work, produced to support your EPA.
Discussion: could be -
an Interview where a series of questions is posed to you about an aspect of your occupation and how you have demonstrated different competencies.
a Professional Discussion or ‘Viva’: an in-depth, two-way discussion between you and the assessor, to assess theoretical or technical knowledge.
EPAs may include two or more of these.
For example, a Level 2 Supply Chain Warehouse Operative will have a Knowledge Test and a Practical, often on the same day, whereas a Level 5 Operations /Departmental Manager will submit a Portfolio and have a Knowledge Test, an Interview, a Project -based Presentation and a Professional Discussion, taking place over a period of weeks to give them time to reflect and prepare between assessments.
